The arena is equipped with a light proofed and closable roof. The essential parts of this constructionare two movable roof panels, each weighing about 800 tons. Those elements open or close within 30 minutes.Due to this unique roof construction the ESPRIT arena is both heat insulated and soundproofed / noise reduced.
The ideal platform for big emotions – whether in the summer month during an Open Air event or with the closed roof and heated interior space during winter.
The official opening of the ESPRIT arena was held on the 7th of January 2005 with a concert of Herbert Grönemeyer, a famous singer from Bochum.
Further highlights in the history of the arena were the world youth day in 2005, sold out concerts from megastars Madonna, Bon Jovi, Phil Collins or Take That, intense soccer matches like the German national team’s international games and diverse international friendly matches or the boxing match of WladimirKlitschkoand Eddie Chambers as well as the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in May 2011.
